  • If you have found a basset hound that is wearing a Basset Buddies Rescue tag, please call the
phone number on the tag.  We will arrange to pick up the dog from you as soon as possible.

  • If the basset has an ID tag with an owner's phone number or a rabies tag with vet clinic
information, please call any phone numbers listed on the tags to see if the owner may be located.

  • If you have found a basset in your neighborhood with no tags, we recommend that you take the
dog to an area vet to be scanned for a microchip.  If present, the microchip could be of great
assistance in determining the rightful owner of the dog and how to contact him/her.

  • If the basset has both no tags and no microchip, the next best step is to post "Found Dog" signs
giving the owner an opportunity to locate the dog.  If no one responds, you have two options:
1) call Animal Control to come and pick up the dog or take the dog to a shelter
2) continue to provide a foster home for the dog and adopt him/her out through a rescue group (like
Basset Buddies Rescue of Texas :)  You may contact us at to pursue
this option.

Listed at the end of this article are the names, locations, and phone numbers of local shelters.
These shelters often post "found dogs" on their website, giving the owner the best
possible chance of finding and reuniting with the dog.  You may also post the
"found dog" notice or look for any owner's notice of lost dog on the following websites:

If you elect to turn the basset in to an area shelter, please notify us so that every
effort may be made to rescue the dog.  Please e-mail us:
1)  The name of the shelter that has the dog, and give them our information as well, so
that they can call us if the dog is in need of rescue.
2) A photo of the basset that we can post on our "Found Dog" page along with the
name of the shelter where the dog was placed.
